OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL SCHOOL LIBRARY

Librarian: T. Pelusi

Hours: Monday to Friday - 8:20 AM - 3:15 PM

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School Library is located in the Jubilee wing of OLMC School. The collection includes 10,700 books, books on tape, videos, DVD’s, and periodicals. Circulation is approximately 400 to 500 items per week. Circulation and the catalog are automated using the Spectrum software program. Four computer workstations are available to access the library catalog and Internet Access is available over the network.

OLMC is a K-8 school with an enrollment of 355 students. Library skills are taught sequentially by the librarian and integrated into the curriculum through collaboration with the classroom teacher. Students are free to come to the library outside their regularly scheduled period before school, and anytime during the day with a Library Pass.

OLMC School Library adheres to the standards adopted by the American Library Association. The goal is to educate students to become information literate in a Christian Catholic setting.

Follow the Link to Jubilee Book Club to find out about a wonderful way to honor a special event or person and benefit the library!

As a reading incentive, the library will maintain “The Library Wall of Fame.” To become a member, a participant presents a record of books read beginning in October. When a student (K-3) has read (or in Kindergarten and 1st grade has been read to) 100 books and in Grades 4-8 the goal they have set, they become a member! Book Logs are available in the library or online at "Library Wall of Fame” Book Log.

This year the school is also participating in the Philadelphia Phillies reading program, "Be a Phanatic About Reading." In conjunction with this, our school has institiuted three times a week DEAR (Drop Everthing And Read) time.

Discipline Procedures

General information concerning our school discipline procedures is published in the Student Handbook. In the Library, these procedures will be in place.

• Students will be expected to obey rules of library as explained at the beginning of the year.
• Consequences for failing to obey these rules will be identical to classroom consequences.

Homework Procedures

Although homework will be posted daily on SchoolNotes, it will be the responsibility of the student to copy assignments accurately and completely into his/her planner during the course of the school day.

Grading Procedure

In Grades 4-8 the following procedures will be in place:

The library grade will be a part of the English Language Arts grade.  One Library skills grade will be incorporated into the Reading grade for each trimester.

When a research assignment occurs in another subject area (Religion, Social Studies, Science, or Mathematics), the teacher who assigns the assessment will include a specific number of points for work pertaining to research skills (e.g. note taking, citing sources) taught in library on the rubric for the project.
